FROM THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA
A Memoir by Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland
These are the tales of home and of family, of courage and of adversity. These are the memories of a courageous woman in turbulent times. Civil rights activist and Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright, Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland takes us on the journey through her life. Phelia, a girl born into the depths of poverty in the heart of the segregated South, finds her painful childhood and reckless adolescence are transformed by opportunity and courage as the Civil Rights movement sweeps through the Delta. Three actresses play all the characters- black and white, young and old, men and women who make this world come alive in an eloquent and impassioned journey filled with story and song.

From the Mississippi Delta

From the Mississippi Delta at Triad Stage

Our “Season of Passion” continues with a powerful memoir – a joyful celebration of one woman’s life that pays tribute to the inspiring women in all of our lives. From the Mississippi Delta is the remarkable story of that woman – a rich and vivid retelling of the life of Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland. Her memories of a tumultuous childhood and adolescence are told with humor and tenderness, and with a care for emotion and detail that transports the audience to the Delta land of her early years.

We love this play because these stories reach beyond their native roots with a universality that speaks to us all. Three women – three talented, funny, powerful storytellers – draw us into this tale of triumph in an evening of story and song. Humorous and vibrant anecdotes collide with a harsh world as these three narrators carry us into Dr. Holland’s colorful world. We come together to tell a triumphant story – gather round and listen.
