New Music
A Family Trilogy
by Reynolds Price
Part I: August Snow and Night Dance
Part II: Better Days*
February 12 – March 18, 2012

Celebrate the life and work of one of the South’s greatest writers in this once-in-a-lifetime theatrical event. Return to a small town in eastern North Carolina and the Avery family that captivated audiences in Triad Stage’s second season. In honor of Reynolds Price, we present the entire New Music trilogy in a special two-part extended run – Part I: August Snow and Night Dance; Part II: Better Days. See the two parts separately or together during weekend marathon performances.

Part I: August Snow and Night Dance
August 1937. One year into their troubled marriage, Taw Avery gives her husband, Neal, an ultimatum – he must put his past behind him or she will leave him forever. With less than a day to decide, they each make a journey of self discovery to find the meaning of commitment and sacrifice. Their story continues at the end of World War II. The battle may be over, but the loss of lives and dreams continues in its wake. Neal and Taw must carry on, searching for a way to keep hope and love at the heart of their family.

Part II: Better Days
Thirty years later, friends and visitors gather to comfort Neal and Taw after the death of Neal’s mother, Roma. Their son, on leave from Vietnam, seeks a destiny beyond his family’s roots. When Roma’s will reveals a startling surprise, conflicting desires threaten to leave everyone in a state of uncertainty, and they must find enormous courage to meet the future in a swiftly changing world.

New Music is presented in collaboration with Greensboro Public Library’s “One City, One Author”.

Ain't Misbehavin'
A Swingin' Musical
conceived by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Murray Horwitz
April 15 – May 13, 2012

Harlem. The Cotton Club. Honky tonk dives, rent parties and sweet, sweet swing. The songs of “Fats” Waller explode in this celebration of some of the best American music ever written. A Broadway blockbuster brimming with hot jazz and powerhouse performances, this Tony Award®-winning revue is the perfect tribute to one of the most prolific musicians of the 20th century. Filled with 30 beloved tunes like “‘T Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do”, “Honeysuckle Rose”, “Mean To Me” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”, it’s musical dynamite that will have you tappin’ your toes, snappin’ your fingers and singin’ along.

Presented in collaboration with North Carolina A&T University’s Jazz Ensemble.

The Illusion
A Comic Fantasy
by Tony Kushner
freely adapted from Pierre Corneille's L'Illusion Comique
June 10 – July 1, 2012

Enter the mysterious lair of the sorcerer Alcandre where Pridamant seeks to learn what has become of the son he banished years ago. In the deepening darkness, the magician conjures three separate moments from the young man’s life; each finds him in a different location and with a different name. As the mysterious scenes progress, passions ignite, allegiances shift and the unhoped-for comes to pass until Pridamant discovers the unexpected truth about his son. Take a comic trip into the world of wizardry where romance, wit, action and adventure come alive at every turn.
